Dental Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays repair selected areas of a damaged tooth when a direct filling may not provide enough coverage and a full crown may not be necessary. An inlay fits within the tooth’s chewing surface; an onlay covers one or more cusps as well. At Strive Dental Studio, the amount of healthy tooth remaining, the location of damage and your bite guide the recommendation. The material and fabrication method determine the appointment sequence.

Inlays and onlays are shaped restorations bonded or cemented to a prepared tooth. An inlay fits between the cusps; an onlay extends over one or more cusps. They can be considered when the pattern of damage calls for more coverage than a filling while preserving suitable remaining tooth structure.

A filling is shaped directly in the tooth. An inlay or onlay is fabricated as a restoration for the prepared area before being fitted. The choice depends on the tooth, isolation, material and bite, not simply on one restoration being stronger in every situation.

Their useful life depends on the condition of the tooth, fit, material, bite forces and home care. They can still chip, loosen or develop decay around the margins. Routine examinations help determine whether monitoring, repair or replacement is needed.

Why the amount of coverage matters

Your dentist checks weakened cusps, cracks and existing restorations before deciding how much of the tooth needs protection. Ask why an inlay, onlay, filling or crown is being recommended for this tooth. If decay extends close to the nerve, additional evaluation or treatment may be necessary before the final restoration.

Appointments and aftercare

The team will explain the expected fabrication method and whether a temporary restoration or another appointment is needed. After placement, the bite is checked and the tooth remains part of your normal brushing and interdental-cleaning routine. Call about persistent bite discomfort or a loose restoration. Discuss a protective appliance if grinding is affecting your teeth.
