Root Canal Therapy

If the thought of a root canal makes you uneasy, say so. We will listen, explain what the examination shows, and discuss the comfort plan and alternatives before treatment. Root canal treatment addresses inflamed or infected tissue inside a tooth when the tooth can be retained. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can affect the pulp, but symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis. At Strive Dental Studio, your dentist examines the tooth and relevant imaging, then discusses treatment, alternatives and the restoration needed afterward. The number of visits and whether an endodontic referral is appropriate depend on the tooth and complexity.

Persistent pain, lingering temperature sensitivity, swelling, a gum bump or tenderness when biting can be reasons to arrange an examination. Some affected teeth have few symptoms, while similar symptoms can arise from other problems. Your dentist uses examination findings and appropriate tests or imaging to determine the cause.

Local anesthesia is used to manage discomfort during treatment. The experience and recovery vary; soreness can occur afterward. Tell the dentist about anxiety, difficulty getting numb and your medical history. Follow the individualized aftercare and medicine guidance you receive, and call for worsening or unexpected symptoms.

When appropriate, root canal treatment can allow you to retain a natural tooth and treat disease within it. The final outcome also depends on remaining tooth structure, the seal and final restoration, gum support and ongoing care. Some teeth cannot be restored predictably, so extraction and replacement alternatives may need discussion.

Cost depends on the tooth, complexity, whether specialist care is needed and the final restoration. Ask whether the estimate includes a build-up and crown if recommended. Insurance benefits and patient responsibility vary by plan, and the team can help you review the estimate and available payment options. Insurance coverage varies by plan.

The dentist accesses and cleans the affected canals, then seals them and plans the restoration that protects the tooth. A crown is often considered when the tooth needs additional coverage. Selected cases may be completed with their restoration in one visit, while others need more than one appointment or specialist treatment.

Deciding whether the tooth can be retained

Ask about the diagnosis, cracks or structural damage, gum support and what restoration the tooth will need. The dentist will explain why root canal treatment is recommended and compare it with extraction when relevant. Complex root anatomy, previous root canal work or other findings can make referral to an endodontist appropriate.

Complete the restoration and follow-up

Follow instructions about chewing on the treated tooth and return for the planned restoration and checks. A root canal does not protect the outer tooth from new decay or fracture. Continue brushing and interdental cleaning, and report a broken restoration, renewed pain or swelling. Ask the office what recovery is expected and when symptoms should be reassessed.
