Tooth-colored fillings commonly use composite resin containing reinforcing filler particles. They are different from dental amalgam fillings. Your dentist can explain the material planned for your child and consider any history of material sensitivity.

Composite is commonly used to repair cavities in children, but the choice depends on the tooth, extent of decay and ability to keep the area appropriately isolated during treatment. Share your child’s medical history, allergies and previous dental experiences so the plan can be tailored to their needs.

Longevity varies with the size and position of the repair, the tooth’s expected lifespan, bite forces and new decay. At checkups, we examine both the restoration and nearby tooth structure. A baby-tooth filling and a adult-tooth filling may have different long-term needs.

Preventing another cavity

A filling repairs existing damage but does not remove the causes of tooth decay. Ask about brushing help, fluoride, cleaning between teeth, snacks and drinks, and an appropriate checkup schedule. Follow the instructions given after treatment and supervise your child while numb. Contact us if pain continues, the bite seems uneven or a filling breaks.
