Scaling & Root Planing

For patients with gum disease, periodontal scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is a crucial treatment. Skilled hygienists perform this procedure to clean and smoothen the roots of the teeth and clear small pockets that form due to gum disease. Removing plaque and debris prevents further infection, allowing the gums to heal naturally. If you have deep gum pockets or heavy tartar buildup, scaling and root planing may be recommended during your dental check-up. This procedure is typically done in two sessions under local anesthesia.

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease. It involves removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line (scaling) and smoothing the root surfaces (root planing) to promote healing and reattachment of the gums.

This treatment is recommended for individuals with gum disease, particularly those with deep periodontal pockets where regular cleaning can’t reach.

The procedure can be mildly uncomfortable, but local anesthesia is typically used to minimize discomfort. Post-procedure sensitivity is normal but usually temporary.
